It’s great news that the UK finally has its COVID-19 vaccination programme underway. Despite a difficult year for the healthcare sector (among many others), there is light at the end of the tunnel. But as we say goodbye to 2020 and what has undoubtedly been one of the most challenging years the public health sector has ever had to face, many hurdles remain in the fight against this deadly disease. 

It’s been well-publicised that the NHS is beginning its much-anticipated vaccination programme with the elderly (over 80s in the first instance), care home residents and frontline healthcare workers: in other words, those at greatest risk of contracting the disease and falling seriously ill. 

It’s now critical that the NHS delivers its large-scale programme without negatively impacting on other essential services. But it’s no small undertaking: the logistics involved in recruiting sufficient properly trained staff to the vaccination programme, whilst simultaneously continuing to manage the delivery of all other vital healthcare services, requires extensive planning and support.
